CITY GET A HELPING HAND

Everton 0-1 Man City

PHIL FODEN’S MANCHESTER CITY LEAVE IT LATE TO BEAT EVERTON, BUT TOFFIES DENIED CLEAR PENALTY IN DYING MINUTES

This Premier League game saw both sides show solidarity with Ukraine as they came out on the pitch with the country’s national flags on their t-shirts.

It was Everton who dominated the start of this meeting with the relegation side refusing to give anything away to the traveling Manchester club.

Frank Lampard said: “The first half was immense from us.”

It took the Citizens 29 minutes before they tested Jordon Pickford goal, with him easily dealing with Kevin De Bruyne’s long range attempt.

The home side’s counter attacking play was proving difficult for City to deal with in the first half, with scouse born Jonjoe Kenny putting his attempt firmly into the Ederson’s side netting.

Pep Guardiola’s men came out for the second half much stronger and started to push Lampard’s team into dropping deep and trying to deal with the pressure the Manchester club was piling on.

Guardiola said: “The second half was much better.”

Pickford was putting on a great show in the second half including an impressive double save to deny De Bruyne and the follow up shot from Bernardo Silva.

An outstanding performance from the English goalkeeper between the sticks which hell surely be happy with as England manager Gareth Southgate was present at Goodison Park.

However, Everton’s number was finally beaten by his England teammate Foden who calmly put the ball in the back of the net in the 82nd minute.

Everton however will be very disappointed with the result as late in the game they were denied what can only be described as a clear penalty.

City’s Rodri was seen controlling the ball with his arm. However, Referee Paul Tierney didn’t see the incident and somehow after a long look from Chris Kavanagh in VAR didn’t deem it as a penalty.

After the game Everton manger Lampard wasn’t impressed with the decision to not award his side with the penalty.

Lampard said: “Even if the VAR says not sure, then go have a look. It is incompetence at best, if not that then someone needs to explain what it is."

Pep Guardiola was overall happy with his sides win as they move six points clear at the top.

He told the BBC: “It was a deserved win after the second half performance.”
