CHAMPIONSHIP

Coventry City 2-0 Wigan Athletic

An inform Coventry City welcomed a struggling Wigan Athletic to the Coventry Building Society Arena on Tuesday night with both teams hoping to claim all three points on offer. However, two second half goals from Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyökeres saw the Coventry side take all three points.

The hosts were coming into this game with back-to-back wins against Blackburn Rovers and Watford which finally saw them climb out of bottom three.

The Greater Manchester side however, arrived at the CBS Arena in very different circumstances hoping for a win that would see them move out of the relegation zone and end their bad form, having lost five out of their last six games.

This wasn't a game full of chances at both ends. The Sky Blues controlled most of the first half, but really struggled to break down a defensive away team who were desperate to stop Mark Robins' side from playing the quick possession football that they've become known for.

Ben Sheaf battled hard in midfield winning back possession on numerous occasions which allowed his side to try and break the deadlock but to no avail. Kasey Palmer had the only threatening chance of the first half but his effort was wide of the post.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 77th minute when Hamer's shot from outside the box was deflected past Jamie Jones in the Wigan goal.

The Tics did try in dying moments of the game to push for an equalising goal but couldn't seem to create any solid chances. A decent delivery from Wigan's Max Power was met with the head of Thelo Aasgaard but he couldn't direct it away from Ben Wilson in the Coventry City Goal who dealt with the attempt without any difficulty.

Wigan's attempt to slow down the game and waste time earlier in the game would inevitably come back to haunt them.

A clearance from city's Josh Eccles was beautifully brought down by Coventry's star man Gyökeres on the halfway line who then held off and outpaced the away side defenders and calmly slotted it past a helpless Jones to make it 2-0 to the Sky Blues in the fifth minute of additional time.

Robins was very happy with his sides victory and acknowledged that they were playing against a very strong opponent. He told the BBC "They're a really tough nut to crack. They've got some really powerful players. They were very stubborn".

The Wigan manger Leam Richardson, however, wasn't as happy at the result than his counterpart. Speaking after the game to the BBC he stated "Second half they started very brightly. The momentum swung with them, and our distances became a little bit too open, but we saw it through until the sucker punch of the deflected goal".

Both sides have one more game before the season takes a break for the World Cup. Coventry host sixth place QPR and will be aiming to get closer to promotion places before they take a break.

Wigan welcome 21st placed Blackpool and will be hoping to leapfrog the Tangerines with a win to move out of the relegation zone.
