LUTON BRING COVENTRY BACK DOWN TO EARTH

LUTON TOWN 5-0 COVENTRY CITY

This was a game that saw a struggling Luton Town face a high-flying Coventry team who were enjoying a four-game unbeaten run whilst the host hadn’t won in their last six games. Luton decided however to break this nasty run of form by thrashing the visiting team 5-0 in which four goals were before the half time whistle.

The Sky Blues arrived at Kenilworth Road hoping to stretch their unbeaten streak to five games against a Luton team who hadn’t won in six games.

However, the hatters had other plans and went 4-0 up before the break. An early penalty in the third minute which was given to the home team for contact in the box was put away from the spot from Adebayo. 15 minutes later the away side conceded two as Harry Cornick registered his name in the score book.

Cornick then turned provider and assisted Luke Berry who put the Hatters well in control. Mark Robins was probably praying for the halftime whistle to save his side from tarnishing their incredible start to this season. Luton strikes again as Elijah Adebayo decided to add another blow to the travellers by scoring his second of the game, Luton’s 4 fourth in the 47th minute.

Coventry would have been sent out for the second half with damage control being the team’s number one priority. But it took just eight minutes for the home team to score their fifth and final goal of the evening. It was Harry Cornick with his second goal of the evening that put the final nail in the Sky Blues coffin.

After the final whistle Luton boss Nathan Jones was more than happy with his side’s performance on the night. He told BBC Three Counties Radio: ‘"I thought we were magnificent. It was as good a performance as I've ever had as a manager, against a side who are third in the league and could've gone top.’

Jones added: "I just thought we were wonderful. I can't take anything away from the performance, I'm just so proud of the group because they've come under a little bit of pressure, and I have as well." Luton’s astounding display seen them climb up the league table putting them in ninth position.

Mark Robins’ interview was safe to say very different to his counterpart. Not very happy with the home sides penalty in the third minute. The Coventry boss speaking to BBC Coventry and Warwickshire said: "The foul apparently was outside the box, so it shouldn't have been a penalty in the first place. That's disappointing, but I'm not going to bleat too much because there were four others that went in after it.

The Coventry city boss clearly wasn’t happy with his sides performance on the night which saw them drop down to fourth place in the league and was keen to put this bad performance behind him and the team. Robins said: "We ended up getting ragged trying to chase the game early on - we were four down before we could breathe. We need to park this and move on."
